On Wednesday afternoon a Wake County judge lowered the bond on David Brandon Mangum from $25,000 to 15,000.
Wendell police arrested Mangum, 29, Tuesday evening. He's charged with embezzlement.
In July, Wendell police told NBC 17 they were investigating an alleged "elaborate embezzlement scheme that had successfully been in operation for a long period of time."
The scheme was first reported to police by a regional representative of the American Cancer Society.
At that time, the representative said the scheme had been carried out by a long time volunteer for the local Relay for Life.
In a June affidavit issued by Wendell Police, Investigator S. Foster II said that the suspect collected money at meetings held at Wendell Baptist Church from local partners.
The suspect was then required to deposit the collected money for the American Cancer Society.
ACS became suspicious when invoices submitted by the suspect appeared to be counterfeit, the affidavit said.
ACS policy requires that checks are to be paid to vendors and not individuals. The representative says that at least one of the invoices turned in to ACS represented a business that does not exist. The business in question is Aaron's Trailer Service and Backhoes.
"The fraudulent invoice is allegedly for the rental of an enclosed trailer and four wheeler, that was to be used for the Relay for Life event at the Carolina Mudcats Stadium on May 22 and 23," the affidavit said. " The representative said that the phonebook, Google, and the local Chamber of Commerce, all show no record of the business on the invoice.
An audit revealed that on at least four occasions no money was deposited following meetings conducted this year.
A computer, flash drives, bank statements and cash deposit bags were seized from the volunteer's residence for further investigation.
Mangum faces charges of embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense.
According to the arrest warrant, Mangum embezzled cash donations and "created and submitted a counterfeit invoice for the alleged rental of equipment when in fact the equipment was donated at no cost to the defendant."

The judge should be removed from the bench as he or she is not serving the best interest of the accused or the public. The activities that brought about his arrest were not a one time deal. He had plenty of time to realize his crime, but chose to ignore the consequences of his greed. The judge is in my opinion over stepping the boundaries of legal responsibility. Too bad he or she will still be sitting on the bench years from now.
