WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -

School board candidate Cathy Truitt formally filed for a runoff in the school board election Wednesday, saying that the public has spoken out against "forced busing," but that the conversation "needs to continue" regarding Wake's plans for how to maintain diversity in schools.

Truitt will face competitor John Tedesco for the Wake County District 2 seat in a runoff in November.

"Although Mr. Tedesco had far more votes, the majority of the people did not turn out to vote," said Truitt. "We have laid to rest the issue of forced busing. Now we have the grace of three to four weeks to really examine, where do we go next?"

Truitt said she wants to see the public examine the issue of whether or not it intends to have segregated schools.

"I want to make sure that the conversation about whether we're going to end up with segregated schools is held," she said. "Whatever happens, the forced busing has ended, and I'm pleased about that," she said. "

If you believe this is a waste of taxpayers money, then would you say the WakeCARES law suit was a waste? The people of district 2 have the chance to shape the future of the county. Are we just going to have cultural diversity, or are we committed to make sure that economically disadvantaged children have equity in education? It doesn't matter what color you are, if you can't afford to live in affluent areas, then you are excluded from their neighborhood schools. If you have auditions or testing to provide magnets to the "best and brightest" you effectively exclude children who can hardly compete because their parents could not afford lessons or tutors. District two has seen more than it's share of high f&r schools, and will likely continue to see them with a neighborhood plan. It is right next door to the highest concentration of poverty in the county, and cannot escape the effects if those schools fail. It will ultimately be good for them to decide what's next. A runoff is not a waste of money.

Ms. Truitt should leave the race. If she was concerned that "most of the people didn't vote" then she should have gotten them to the polls on October 6th. Now, all of the liberal social engineers will team up to ensure that Tedesco does not win...when he almost doubled Truitt on October 6th. I agree this is a waste of taxpayer money and I'll bet those voting for Truitt pay much less in taxes than those that will vote for Tedesco. I just pray that all of the hard work that went into taking back the school board does not go to waste. Ms. Truitt, we won't have segregated schools. Since when does a neighborhood exclude blacks or whites from residing in the neighborhood/district? If I want to live in an area and be around like-minded people, then that is my choice...and if someone wants to move in and pay the price of admission, ie. pay the taxes, buy the house, fund a majority of the tax base, then come on...I welcome anyone. But don't bus a kid into my district just becasue of the color of his skin or how much his parents make (or don't make)..white or black...that is judging people based upon color of skin which does nothing more than promote racism and put the poorer child in a situation where he must sit next to a kid with new shoes, a BMW, 2 parents (what a novel idea)Does this make the poor kid better or just make the poor kid resent the rich kid?

Ms. Truitt has shown grave disregard for the taxpayers of Wake County by demanding a runoff when Tedesco beat her by more than 2-to-1 with their race being the only thing on the ballot. This is an ego-centric move that must be rejected. Everyone should write Ms. Truitt (http://cathytruitt.com) and express why she should not embark on this tremendous waste of taxpayer resources when the voters have clearly spoken. Perhaps she needs more of a "conversation" to be convinced, but the voters clearly don't.
