RALEIGH, N.C. -

People against domestic violence said silence speaks a thousand words.

That's why the Wake County Domestic Violence Taskforce used a silent march Tuesday to get its message across.

It's a message Allen Thomas knows all too well.

"I lost my mother to domestic violence. She was murdered by my father," Thomas said.

Taskforce member Barry Bryant said the march gets people's attention.  He said it also helps to remember victims in the county who lost their lives to domestic violence including Gerald Hardy and June Carlyle who both died earlier this year.

"We try to come out following an arrest in Wake County bringing awareness to how frequently this happens and how dangerous it could be," Bryant said.

Thomas traveled from Raeford to the Wake Courthouse to march, honoring his mother, who was shot to death in 2008.

He said the key to decreasing domestic violence is to be proactive and show young men that they can have a positive impact.

"Every chance I get I come out and show that men can get involved as well. The stats show that men are usually the ones causing violence, so I think it's important to show we're against it," Thomas said.

Katie and Kelly Dowless, the nieces of June Carlyle who was killed in Wake County this year, also showed their support and passed on their advice to others who may be in trouble.

"Domestic violence is never okay," Katie Dowless said.

Kelly Dowless hopes victims know that they're not alone.

"There's definitely help out there. There are resources and people that are willing to help," Kelly Dowless said.

Organizers said this is an ongoing battle and they will continue holding these marches after any arrests in a domestic violence death.
