CARY, N.C. -

It has been three days since a hit and run accident left a 16 year old dead in Cary.

Among the flowers, balloons and notes at a modest memorial for Kailee Birdsong, is an open letter to the driver of a tan or beige van that police say left the scene of the wreck.

Robby Birdsong says he hopes the driver reads the note, and decides to come forward.

  • Dear Driver,
We are not blaming you. It is just as much my fault if not more that my beautiful little girl is gone today. That being said I still can not rest until I look you in your eyes and know exactly how you arrived in that intersection and why you did not stop and help my family.
I would like to ask that you try and consider our feelings right now. I don't know if you have children, maybe your married, if so this won't be hard to do. If not please just try to imagine loosing something so precious and close to your heart and never knowing how or why or even who had been invovled in taking that from you. If you're able to do that, you will understand the pain my family is experience for the lost of our Kailee. Please help us gain closure. I will ask for leniency on your behalf. I know your probably scared right now (I hope) but please just come forward so everyone can find a little peace in this great tragedy, including yourself.

Police say they're tracking down leads, but still have not gotten the break they need.

Anyone with information should contact the Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012.

Meanwhile, a Good Samaritan who helped the Birdsong family on Monday is talking about his experience.

Jeremy Thompson is a project manager with a construction project going on near the intersection; he said he was coming back from lunch when he and some coworkers came upon the accident moments after it happened.

"I looked over and saw a young lady laying on the side of the road," said Thompson.  "Ran over and tried to help, and it appeared there was nothing I could do."

Thompson comforted Kailee's stepmother, Melissa Birdsong, and asked if there was anyone he should call.

Melissa gave Thompson her phone, and he talked with Robby Birdsong, who was at work more than an hour and a half out of town.

Thompson agreed to stay with the family, and watched over Kailee's three year old brother, who was also in the accident, but did not suffer any major injuries.

"They had him in all protective gear and they was wanting to run some tests to make sure he was OK," said Thompson.  "He had himself a little blankee, and a CD -- a Kids Bop CD -- he kept wanting to play his CD. We just kind of sat there and watched cartoons in the hospital, talked about Transformers, until his dad showed up. He's a great little boy."

Robby Birdsong said that he was overwhelmed with the assistance they received from Thompson, who was a complete stranger.  Thompson shrugs off that kind of talk.

"Honestly I just did what I felt was the right thing to do," he said.

The Birdsong family and Thompson have kept in touch, and Thompson plans on attending Kailee's funeral on Friday in Hamlet.
