In a press conference this morning, newly elected North Carolina GOP Chairman Tom Fetzer called for Democrats to cancel a fundraiser he said violates "the spirit of the law."
"This is wrong," Fetzer said. "The timing is wrong. The Democratic party needs to cancel this fundraiser."
Democrats plan to hold a reception on June 23 to honor democratic legislators, according to a flyer provided by republicans.
Fetzer said the fundraiser violates the spirit of an ethics reform law that prevents legislators from fundraising while the general assembly is in session.
"Just wait until the legislature is adjourned," Fetzer said. "It's simple, it's a no brainer. Otherwise it invites speculation and invites the perception that pay-to-play politics is alive and well and that the venue has changed from the I-Hop bathroom to democratic party headquarters."
During his first press conference as the state's top republican, Fetzer also outlined what he thinks it will take to bring republicans to power in North Carolina.

"We're gonna win, we're gonna have victories," Fetzer said answering a question about what the party plans to do differently. "(That) means we need to do a lot of things better."
Fundraising, party branding and grassroots organizing were three of the changes Fetzer mentioned specifically that he wants to change.
"We're going to be doing a lot of things differently," Fetzer said. "The dynamics of elections are changing."
Fetzer also called for republicans to become more technologically advanced, saying democrats help the upper hand in technology in the last election.
He also called for the party to become more aggressive.
"Competition is what America's all about and it's especially what our political process is all about," Fetzer said. "We republicans need to get better at competing."

Nice going Tom. I too am a Republican and agree with everything you said in this interview. We need to take back control of all branches of the Government. I would like for President Obama to make this following statement. I Obama hereby resign as President of the United States of America immediately and reverse all of the mistakes I made as President and all the CHANGES I made during my administration. I’m sorry for my actions and will never get back into politics again. I’m sure he can word it a lot better than I since that is the only thing ne is really good at. Thanks Tom Sincerely, Kenneth Fetzer
