Police are looking for a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on Falls of Neuse early Wednesday morning.
According to Raleigh Police spokesman Jim Sughrue, the pedestrian was struck in the roadway at about 6:55 a.m. on Falls of Neuse just south of its intersection with Spring Forest Road.
Investigators believe the victim was struck by an SUV, possibly a blue Chevrolet Blazer or a similar vehicle. Police are looking for the car, which should have substantial front end damage.
Police said witness reports indicate the SUV hit the victim, stopped, got out, and checked to see what he hit before speeding off. The person is believed to be a white male and wearing a white T-shirt.
The victim, Lewis Avery Gray, 71, of Raleigh, was then struck multiple times afterward by drivers who did not realize what had happened.
Anyone with more information about the crash is asked to call the Raleigh Police Department's Field Operations Division at (919) 996-3350.
According to Tom Gold with the City of Raleigh Transportation Department, between Jan. 1, 2006 and Feb. 15, 2009, there have been 67 crashes within 100 feet of that intersection. Last April, two child pedestrians were killed at that intersection.
