North Carolina has awarded the contract for software to archive the state's e-mail to Mimosa Systems Inc. of Santa Clara, Gov. Perdue said today.
The $694,448 contract is for the installation, implementation and one-year maintenance of software that will make it easier to store, search and retrieve e-mails. All incoming e-mail that clears spam filters will be archived.
Work on the system will begin immediately with the development of a detailed project plan that will include hardware and staffing for the system.
"Preserving state emails as a public record is vital to a transparent and accountable government," said Perdue. "Ultimately, a more transparent government will bring about a better government."
Gov. Perdue in July signed an executive order directing the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) to obtain an e-mail archive system "as soon as practicable." The current back-up system is not a true archiving system, but is designed to help recover the system in case of a catastrophic failure.
Twenty-nine vendors responded to the state's bid request.
About 41,000 state employees use the e-mail service provided by ITS to send and receive roughly one million e-mails daily. The system filters out about five million e-mail messages a day that contain spam or viruses.
