WHITAKERS, N.C. --

Two Whitakers, N.C. men have been charged with making moonshine, after a smoke plume lead authorities to their illegal distillery.

Officials say Alcohol Law Enforcement Agents were tipped off that moonshine was being manufactured in the Whitakers community, just north of Rocky Mount, but an exact location had not been known.

On November 4, agents saw smoke coming from 11522 Red Oak Road. After an investigation, agents determined that Herman Paul Wood and his brother Joseph Adam Wood were allegedly involved in the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of moonshine.

ALE agents seized 460 full quart glass mason jars of "non-taxpaid spirituous liquor" and a stainless steel liquor distillery. Officials say the street value of the moonshine was valued at $11,000.

The Wood brothers have been charged with unlawful possession of equipment or ingredients intended for the use of manufactured spirituous liquor, unlawfully manufacturing spirituous liquor without obtaining an ABC permit and revenue license, and with possession of non-taxpaid spirituous liquor.

Officials said the brothers used watermelons, strawberries, apples, pears, and plums to make the illegal liquor, which the brothers allegedly grew and prepared on their property.
