CaptionThe shootings at Fort Hood have prompted changes at one of the area's largest military installations.
Shortly after word of the shootings became public, officials at Fort Bragg decided to step up security both inside the base and at the nine access gates to the post.
"All gates will have increased checks," Ft. Bragg Spokesman Colonel Bill Buckner said.
In addition, on-base security will become more frequent in several areas.
"We'll increase security patrols in housing areas and take a look at other high density areas like the PX, commissary and others places where large numbers of people gather," Buckner explained.
But security was not the only thing weighing on soldier's minds at Bragg. When it was revealed that the Ft. Hood massacre was committed by an American soldier, anger arose amongst the ranks.
"It's treason -- that's how I feel," Private First Class Robert McDowell said. "I don't understand why he did what he did."
Added Sgt. Kisha Pollard, "We're here to trust each other. Part of our job is to trust each other and for him to do that -- what was in his head?"
Because of such extreme emotional response, Ft. Bragg officials hope the additional security will provide a level of comfort to those who live and work there.
"What we want to do is reassure families that Ft. Bragg is doing what it needs to protect resident's so folks can move about freely and in confidence that the right things are being done to protect them," Buckner said.
Officials at Ft. Bragg say they'll monitor the developments out of Texas and then make more permanent adjustments to their security procedures based on what they learn from the Ft. Hood situation.
