Suspect Shot, Killed During Confrontation With Harnett County Deputy

SANFORD, N.C.

A Harnett County man was shot and killed during a confrontation with a Harnett County Sheriff's deputy early Thursday morning during an attempt to serve a search warrant in a drug investigation.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Department said two armed suspects approached deputies at 48 K Bar Lane in Sanford as members of the department's narcotic unit and special response team along with the SBI tried to serve search warrants at about 2:15 a.m.

One of the suspects was shot and killed during the confrontation and another was disarmed and taken into custody, according to investigators. The second suspect, Orlando Mendez Castaneda, 26, of the same address was charged with trafficking cocaine of possession, trafficking cocaine by manufacturing, possession of drug paraphernalia and resist, obstruct and delay. He is being held at the county jail on $3.5 million bond.

The identity of the suspect who was shot has not yet been released.

According to a press release, a large amount of cocaine was found at the location.

Deputy T. Parker of the Harnett County Sheriff's Office was involved in the confrontation with suspect who died at the scene. Deputy T. Parker has been assigned to administrative duty.

SBI Special Agent Michael Hall was also involved in the shooting. He is assigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation by the SBI's Special Investigations Section.
