RALEIGH, N.C. -
The commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol says he will step down barely a year after taking the post.
Col. Walter Wilson Jr. announced Tuesday he will retire effective Aug. 1. The 49-year-old Tarboro native was promoted to commander just last July.
Wilson is a 29-year veteran of the patrol. He told colleagues in a message he's never regretted his career choice and says he's "worked hard to make things better for all employees."
Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Reuben Young said Wilson served honorably as commander and his dedication and commitment to highway safety is appreciated.
It's not clear who will be Wilson's successor. His predecessor - Fletcher Clay - served as commander for four years.
