- County health and school officials announced school would remain open.
- About 80 percent of students were at school Thursday.
Heeding the advice of school and health officials, about 80 percent of parents at Reedy Creek Middle School sent their children to school Thursday morning. The school community was alerted Wednesday that a student at the school had tested positive for the H1N1 (swine flu) virus.
Parents were notified through a telephone message from the principal Wednesday afternoon. A letter went home with students Thursday afternoon.
Mike Spencer, whose daughter Marley is in sixth grade at Reedy Creek, said he wasn't concerned about sending her to school.
"We talked to her about it," he said. "We told her just to be careful and have a good day."
Tony Taylor, who has a child in seventh grade and teaches at the school, said he was suprised by the news, but not any more worried than during the seasonal flu.
"Not very many people are affected by the H1N1 virus," he said. "As opposed to the regular flu virus."
The student was identified after reporting to his family physician. Wake Health Director Elizabeth Tilson said his case is related to the first case identified in Wake County, as what health officials call a "secondary contact." He is already recovering at home.
Tilson said on Wednesday that the student was an isolated case at the school and that she was not aware of any other pending tests among students for the virus.
