An important part of being prepared this hurricane season is moving past the "what if a storm hits" and getting in "here it comes" mode.
Storm one day away:
Make sure to fill your car up with gas. While you're out be sure to pick up some of the essentials like food water and cash.
Around the yard be sure to pick up or secure any loose debris because strong winds can blow them around as projectiles.
If you have storm shudders, close them, but if don't you can always cover your windows with some plywood for added safety.
Make sure you have plenty of food water and ice.
Fresh batteries for radios, flashlights and other things, but some other options are buying a crank up flashlight or weather radio that doesn't need batteries.
During The Storm:
Stay indoors, do not drive around to see the storm or damage.
Keep your pets inside.
Listen to you weather radio to stay informed about wind, rain and flooding threats.
After The Storm:
Gather your supplies, remember if the power is out, it could be out for days.
If you have to go out, drive very carefully and slow as power lines and other road hazards will present a danger.
If you do run into flooding on the road remember "turn around, don't drown".
Remember, chances are most home phone service will be knocked out. So make sure your cell phone is charged before the storm because very often you'll still be able to make out going calls, also you can send a text message if necessary. Hurricanes are serious business, educate yourself and stay on top of the weather updates in your area. There is no harm in being overly cautious.
