Hope Mills Residents Deal With Tornado Aftermath (NBC 17)
Tornado warnings had been issued Friday night in several counties as reports of damage spread from Cumberland to Greene counties. All warnings have expired.
Police said the tornado in Hope Mills caused damage to some residential homes. Progress Energy reports that approximately 220 customers were without power in the Wayne and Cumberland Counties areas.
A portion of the Interstate was closed because of an overturned tractor-trailer and downed trees.
Highway Patrol spokesman Capt. Everett Clendenin said the tractor-tractor overturned Friday between the northbound 40 and 41 mile markers just inside Cumberland County, north of the Robeson County line.
According to the Fayetteville Observer, Hope Mills town police reported two tornadoes down in Hope Mills — one at Purolator and another that tore roofing off in the Galberry Farms area. The paper reported that trees were down along I-95 near the Robeson County line. An overturned 18-wheeler on I-95 was reported about 5:38 p.m. at mile marker 42.
I-95 was temporarily closed in the southbound lanes at Hope Mills.
One more round of rain is possible early Sunday, but most of the day will be dry and windy. Gusts could be as strong as 30 to 40 miles per hour, which could topple trees. Rain the past few days has loosened soil which could make it easier for trees to fall.
