Cover up the plants, check your antifreeze and pile on the blankets. North Carolina is about to get hit with an Arctic blast.
National Weather Service forecasters said a cold front passing through the state Wednesday will be followed by a significant blast of Arctic air. Temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing beginning Thursday and last into the weekend.
Meteorologist Scott Sharp said Thursday's highs will occur early in the day before temperatures begin to plummet. He said temperatures will drop Thursday night into the teens in much of the state, and into the single digits in western counties.
Similar temeratures are expected Friday.
Temperatures are expected to moderate Saturday, but Sharp said conditions will remain below normal for this time of year.
