RALEIGH, N.C. -

A copy of a 1910 reference book about African-American history is now available online.

The State Library of North Carolina has put digital images of "An Era of Progress and Promise" online. The book includes entries on dozens of colleges, universities and secondary schools serving African-Americans in southeastern states in the decades after emancipation.

Only 79 copies of the book are in American libraries, including five in North Carolina. Digitization project manager Christy Allen says the State Library's copy was showing wear and tear because it was so popular with patrons.

The library posted parts of the book online in 2004. The entire volume has been available since late last year.
