2 N.C. Gas Stations To Refund For Price Gouging
Credit: AP Online
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina Attorney General's Office says two gas stations will repay customers $7,000 after spiking gas prices in September amid fuel shortages.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said in a statement Wednesday the owners of M&J Food Mart in Asheville and Shell To Go in McLeansville will repay customers a combined $7,000 for overpriced gas. Gas reached $4.99 a gallon for regular unleaded at M&J Food Mart, and $5.09 at Shell To Go.

Cooper's office began investigating after consumers complained that gas cost more than $7 in some parts of the state after Hurricane Ike made thousands of residents rush to the pump in fear of gas running out.

Six gas stations have now agreed to repay consumers who purchased overpriced gas. Each will also pay $5,000 in civil penalties to North Carolina schools.

It would be interesting to find out “HOW” they will repay those customers, or if that money will actually make it back to the individual payers who paid for the overpriced gas. My guess is it really won’t.
And the fine/penalty is only $5K, for theivery? Come on Attorney General office - we respect you, but a $5K slap on the hand is just that. They need a harder slap, something that would draw them to the brink of closing business. And should that happen, that would provide space for more honest would-be gas station owners to set up shop. Community service for the theiving decision maker should be part of the list of penalties.

Go jump in a pool of hungry alligators as far as I care. This planet of 6.5Bil doesn’t need an extra...you’re breathing my kids oxygen!

if the state of n.c. would regulate the price of gas in the state you would not have this kind of proublem

n.c. shoud control the price of gas in the state

Kevin, Michael; you two are idiots. The law of supply and demand should regulate the price of ALL things. I suppose you do not believe in capitalism, and want the government to take care of your liberal souls forevre!

Now that gasoline is under $2.00 a gallon, I bet you are wanting to go out and buy that SUV that you wouldn’t think of buying six months ago. Go ahead, and when the price goes up again, you will be crying to Roy Cooper to “punish” the price gougers again. “I want my ma-me” (the government) to take care of me!!!!!

  • Kevin Parker on 11/27 07:29 PM

Hey John, chill out. You start offensively by name calling, then you come back for more with assumptions. No, I don’t want to go out and get the SUV, and where in my post do you derive information that would lead you to that assumption?
You chalk this up to capitalism, but what you don’t realize is that this is “gouging”, NOT capitalism. And we have laws, even in this capitalistic society for that, making it ILLEGAL. Did you read the article, were you even able to read? There was a natural disaster (Ike and the other I don’t recall right now) and these gas stations decided it was time to profit off it. We as a society have designed laws against that type of activity, and so we punish offenders. Simple as that.

Yet you come out and call us “idiots”. You should go out and educate yourself a bit more and get the facts first, then if necessary sling names accordingly, if needed.

Oh and, learn how to spell dude, my 7yr old does a better job. Here, we speak and write the English language.

Until then, please proceed to the pool of hungry alligators as I suggested for the offenders - you are they type who is breathing my kids oxygen. Get off our planet dude.
