NORTH CAROLINA

Seven counties in central North Carolina are experiencing moderate drought because of a lack of rainfall.

Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Lee, Orange and Randolph counties were listed in drought conditions Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor. The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources says the new report marks the first time since May any area of North Carolina has been in a drought. Significant rainfall in May and later months helped replenish the water supply in some areas of the state that had been in a drought for two consecutive years.

The 2007-08 drought was the worst since North Carolina began keeping records in 1895. Officials urge residents of counties affected by the drought to conserve water as part of a daily routine.
