DURHAM, N.C. -

Former President Bill Clinton is among those scheduled to speak at a memorial service for the late historian, John Hope Franklin, and his wife, Aurelia.

Clinton is scheduled to speak Thursday at the service at Duke Chapel in Durham. The former president appointed Franklin to lead a national task force on race and awarded him the Medal of Freedom in 1995. The medal is the nation's highest civilian honor.

Franklin died in March at the age of 94. The service is being held as a celebration of his and his wife's lives. They were married on June 11, 1940.

Aurelia Whittington Franklin died in 1999.

Franklin's book, "From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans," is considered the definitive account of the black experience in the U.S.
