With the holidays fast approaching, you may want to think twice before buying gift cards.
A recent survey shows nearly two thirds of consumers plan to buy gift cards this holiday season. But the cards could be a liability if the business that issued them goes bankrupt. When Sharper Image went bankrupt customers lost about 20 million dollars in unused gift cards.

Many people use the gift cards to shop after the holidays when prices come down. I'm planning on giving checks instead.
